QUIZLETS

OVERVIEW

Have you ever felt that your study routine was not giving you any result? Have you been thinking what else you can do to improve your study technique? Research shows that testing yourself with flashcards is more effective than rereading notes. Quizlet's primary products include digital flash cards, matching games, practice electronic assessments, and live quizzes that you might also find very helpful in preparation for your incoming AP, CLEP or DSST Exams.

Retrieval practice

The practice recalling a piece of information or retrieving it from memory is making it more likely that you are to remember it later on. This psychological finding explains why it’s effective to study with flashcards or by taking a practice test. Quizlet’s study tools are designed to help you maximize the benefits of retrieval practice.

Question Types

The question types on Quizlet were carefully designed to help students study in an effective and efficient way. Answering written questions from memory requires effortful retrieval or “recall”, which will really help you learn. Multiple choice questions are designed to get you through more questions in a shorter span while also helping you learn the incorrect answer choices. If you study with flashcards or multiple-choice questions, make sure to try to recall the right answer before you look at the solution!

Guidance Fading

Learning is most effective when you get more instructional support on the beginning but gradually have less and less until the guidance is completely faded. Quizlet provides this progression by moving you from easier multiple-choice questions to more challenging written questions. When you start studying, you might get multiple choice answers correct by process of elimination without practicing recall like you do with written questions.

Goal Setting

Quizlet’s Learn mode study paths help you start strong when you launch a study session, by helping you set a learning goal for yourself. Self-reflection before studying can help you get the most out of your time on Quizlet. The key is to be as clear as possible about your learning goals, and keep them top of mind as you make your progress!

Pretesting

That extra retrieval practice is great, but, intuitively, taking a quick pretest before you even start studying is also a powerful way to learn better, even if you get every question in the pretest wrong. Rather than re-reading your notes or textbook, start your studying with a pretest by using Quizlet’s Test mode.

Tips for Studying on Quizlet

Do you want to make the most of your study sessions on Quizlet? Here are some tips to help you study better on Quizlet according to Alexa Saccone.

Star terms to focus on concepts you’re struggling with

Starring terms is a good strategy for you if you want to focus on those terms later to make the best use of your study time. It’s easy to star terms while reviewing them in Flashcards mode.

Swipe through flashcards on the Quizlet app

Flashcards mode on the free Quizlet app works differently than on the Quizlet website. On the app, you have the option to do a Flashcard Quiz, where you swipe right if you know the term and left if you don’t. The app keeps track of the terms you don’t know, and then quizzes you on them until you do. You can turn off this mode and study your flashcards in the usual way as well.

Use keyboard shortcuts

You may have noticed a little keyboard icon on some Quizlet pages, like when you make a new study set or use Flashcards mode. If you hover over these icons, you will find a bunch of keyboard shortcuts that make using Quizlet more efficient. So next time you see a keyboard icon on Quizlet, hover over it to see what shortcuts are available.

Make classes and add your friends

You can make a class with your friends to streamline both the creation and sharing of sets. Once you’ve created the class, it’s easy to invite people to it: Just type in their email address or share an invite link in the group chat.

Note: When you make the class, make sure to select “Allow other members to add and delete sets and add new members.” The admin of the class can always change this setting later.

Take advantage of the pretesting effect with Test

Before you start studying a set, go to Test mode and generate a practice test. Do your best to answer the questions, but don’t worry if you get them right or wrong. Then, just continue studying on Quizlet as you usually do: Use Learn, Flashcards or whichever study mode is your favorite.

If you have Quizlet Plus, you can also take advantage of the pretesting effect when you’re personalizing your study path. When asked how well you know the set, answer with “Let’s find out” to take a short quiz that checks your knowledge. Like Test mode, this acts like a pretest.

Study entire folders

Folders are a great way to organize your study sets. This is great when you’re studying for a midterm or final that involves a ton of study sets from throughout the semester. Just go to a folder you want to study and click on “Study.” Then choose what study mode you want to use, and voila: You can study all of the terms and definitions in the folder at one time. Study a folder with Flashcards mode, and star terms you’re less confident about while going through the entire deck. Quizlet will keep track of what terms you star, so you can quickly assess which terms and sets you should spend more time on.

Help out your eyes with Night Mode

You can stay focused longer and take care of your eyes with Quizlet’s Night Mode, available both on their website and their mobile apps.

Conclusion

Is it a good study tool? Quizlet is a basic framework that students fill with their own information. Therefore, its quality depends on the accuracy of the user-created flashcard sets. As a whole, Quizlet is really good, sometimes even great but, students should be mindful because there are some unhelpful and inappropriate sets floating around, too! Use it accordingly.
