CLEP Spanish Language with
Writing

Summary of Exam

The CLEP Spanish with Writing exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions with two writing tasks and costs $90. You will need to possess sufficient knowledge of the Spanish language. This exam is split into two sections. The first section is reading, listening, comprehending, and choosing the best response to rejoinders, dialogues, and narratives through multiple choice questions. In the second section of the exam, you will need to write an e-mail to a friend or relative and should be at least 60 words in length, as well as write a composition based on a given situation that should be at least 100 words in length. Both should obviously be written in Spanish.

Scoring and Credit

The multiple-choice section of the CLEP Spanish with Writing exam is scored by a computer that gives you one point per correct answer. Each answer on the writing section will be graded by two or more independent college professors on a scale from 0-4, 0 meaning it was written in a different language, doesn’t make sense, or left the section blank and 4 meaning the writing shows great command in Spanish written expression. The scores from both sections are combined, with the multiple-choice section being worth 75% and the written section being worth 25% of your score. This number is considered your “raw score”. Your raw score is then converted to scaled score from 20-80. This is the score on your score report. The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends granting credit for mastery of Spanish level 1 for scores 50 and above and granting credit for mastery of Spanish levels 1 and 2 for scores 65 and above. Individual institutions can set their own scores for which they grant credit. Most institutions provide their CLEP score policy on their websites.
